Sustainability in Fashion

Sustainability in fashion is imperative, and it has never been more crucial to design with meaning, purpose and sustainability in mind. Throughout my time at university I thoroughly researched and explored the realms of opportunities and gaps in the market for a more sustainable outcome. I have an up to date understanding of what is currently available and being developed in the fashion industry. From eco materials, to recycling, repairing and reusing, there are many options to explore.

In 2018 I interned for international award winning and sustainable designers Vin+Omi, who focus on sustainable approaches to business, design and textiles through eco innovations and social impacts. They are pioneers in the eco fashion industry. Working alongside Vin+Omi inspired me to push the ideals of sustainable fashion by thinking outside of the box in all my projects following, to find exciting gaps in the market.

After being inspired by Vin+Omi's outlook on sustainability, I travelled to Madagascar to volunteer with a group of like minded people to educate and inform current residents of the importance of sustainability and looking after their environments. Travelling brings me joy and often inspires my next projects. My volunteering experience in both third-world and developing countries has given me great confidence with working in new and unfamiliar environments. Sparking my interest into sustainability and inspiring me to continue research into the matter and any creative projects following (inside and outside of university).

Sustainable fashion is the way forwards and I believe it to be incredibly important. Below are a few examples of projects where I have explored sustainable options when designing.

Creating propaganda pieces (similar to the likes of PETA) to push the awareness of sustainability in fashion. Inspired by the colours and shapes of Unite d'Habitation by Le Corbusier, the outfits challenged the ideals of Contour fashion. Using novelty plastic drinking straws and clear recycled plastic to create structural and 3 dimensional bodysuits, corsets and bras. The slogans suggested against using the popular throw away drinking straws, creating pieces that express the importance and urgence of looking after our environment.
